Scrapbooking Techniques: Watercolouring

Many people believe they need to be trained artists to achieve a nice watercolour effect on their projects.  Not so!  There are a variety of ways to get different watercolour effects, so here are a few:

Technique #1:

  • Colour your solid-image stamp with either watercolour crayons or pencils
  • Mist with water spray bottle
  • Stamp onto cardstock – let dry

 Technique #2:

  • Colour your solid-image stamp with either watercolour crayons or pencils
  • Mist with water spray bottle
  • Stamp onto cardstock – let dry
  • Ink stamp with pigment or dye-based inks
  • Stamp on top of watercoloured image for a 3D look

 Technique #3:

  • Ink outline stamp in a dark colour
  • Stamp onto cardstock
  • Colour the edges of the image with either watercolour crayons or pencils
  • Using an Aqua Painter, “pull” the colour from the edges toward the center

Technique #4:

  • Ink outline stamp in a dark colour
  • Stamp onto cardstock
  • Using an Aqua Painter, “pull” the colour from either watercolour crayons or pencils
  • Colour image on cardstock
  • Make edges of image darker to give more dimension

Technique #5:

  • Ink outline stamp in a lighter colour
  • Stamp onto cardstock
  • Using an Aqua Painter, “pull” the colour from either watercolour crayons or pencils
  • Colour image on cardstock by smearing the colour over the image and “bleeding” onto the white cardstock.  Just like with finger-painting, the messier the better
  • Restamp image in a darker colour over the lighter image, using a Stampa-ma-jig for exact placement

Technique #6:

  • Ink outline stamp in a dark colour
  • Stamp onto white cardstock on top of another cardstock colour
  • Using an Aqua Painter, “pull” the colour from either watercolour crayons or pencils
  • Colour image on white cardstock
  • Make edges of image darker to give more dimension
  • Raise the white image with Dimensionals, lining up over the stamped image on the coloured cardstock
  • ** Works the best if the image on the white cardstock is part of a tag, or is cut out **

Scrapbook a Recipe Album for Father’s Day

Shopping for Dad can be difficult.  How many ties or pairs of socks does a guy really need?  Exactly!

So, instead of agonizing over a gift for him, create a handy Recipe Album for Dad!  My Dad is just starting to get into cooking himself, so I put together a handy album that goes through some key recipes that he can quickly and easily put together himself.

The “brainwave” for this album came from seeing a child’s chipboard Spiderman book that had an interesting swoopy edge.  Stripping off the printed story left a beautiful chipboard base that can be easily covered and used as the foundation for the album.  Adding in the recipes and using images from StampinUP! sets like “Voila!” and “Tart and Tangy”, gave the album the food flair that it needed.

Photography Tip of the Week: Cropping Polariods

Many of us have heritage pictures that are in the Polaroid format, back from when our parent were “groovy” and decided to have the “latest technology”.  How far we have come!

When scrapbooking these photos, never cut the photo – it will cause the chemicals to leak out, which will damage your page and the photo itself.  To cover the white band at the bottom, use fiber, ribbon, or stamp images using Staz-on ink.  Brads and Eyelets will also allow the chemicals to leak, so avoid them as well.

Scrapbook a Chipboard Mini Album for Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is fast approaching, and finding something for a Mom who has everything is getting more and more difficult each year.  Well, she doesn’t really have everything, but enough of what she actually needs and uses on a regular basis.  After putting up and taking down the plethora of holiday decorations this last Christmas season, I put a ban on buying her anymore decorations…let’s see if that still sticks when December rolls around, as her birthday is that month too….

Anyway, I decided to create one of those popular chipboard albums that are so hot right now, that spell out a word.  Unfortunately, the word choices are limited, unless you special-order one, and I wasn’t smart enough to get one ahead of time.  I decided to challenge myself to make one myself.  So, using sheets of thinner chipboard and the Simon Upper chipboard letters from StampinUP!, I was able to trace the letters, cut the chipboard, cover it with Groovy Guava and Close to Cocoa, and create the album.  A few embellishments, stamped images, and the fabulous Afternoon Tea paper later, and voila!  Chipboard mini album that spells “MOM”.

Instead of putting pictures of my mother in it, I decided to use pictures of my Grandmother, as a momento for Mom.  The hardest part was cutting the letters out, but the font is fairly straight-forward, so little work with the craft knife (Cheryl will be happy!).
